NYFW: The Back Row at The Daily Front Row

Dear Diary–

I photographed the red carpet at The Daily Front Row Fashion Media Awards…from the back row. Progress! I was there! And it was equal parts thrilling and frantic.

On Friday night, at the Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown, Ashley Graham hosted the fifth annual media awards to honor Kendall Jenner, the Fashion Icon of the Decade, and Mario Testino, Creative Director of the Year. Political Commentators Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski (pictured with her daughter) presented the Best September Issue award. Disruptors, Activists, All-Around Geniuses Lena Dunham and Jenny Konner received an award from Icon Diane Von Furstenberg.

Before attendees could find their spot around a suitcase full of liquor, they walked the red carpet. My place was to work around the big dog photogs, who get their plum standing spots assigned while the rest of the photographers work around them. There’s a sort of dance of heightened awareness to avoid jostling any part of a fellow photographer who is three inches away from you–trying to get quick shots from behind, in-between them. The established photographers know each other’s roles–there’s the barker, the motivator, the mother. One guy is constantly shouting, “Look to the left…over here please…come down this way…” Beside him, a woman photographer says, “There you go, that looks great,” in genuine support of a newcomer.

Diary, it’s been a year since my last entry–when I was “12”. Now that I’m “13,” I’m feeling more confident in this new role of fashion blogger. I’ve learned the best places to hang out to capture the scene, and I’m more certain about what I want to say. I’ve found that I’m most comfortable behind the camera. I still struggle greatly with the main idea behind blogging–showing the clothes on yourself–a regular, everyday person. I have no selfies on Instagram–that’s bad. But I’m working on it. In fact I’m going to start dealing with this failing by having a laugh at myself, and posting Selfie-Conscious pics on Instagram.

I wonder how anxious these red carpet personalities get when having their pictures taken–it’s a lot of pressure.
