They call it Statement Jewelry because it announces and proclaims its existence. Small or large, there’s more than just the emphasis that’s placed on the piece. It answers to the overall look, punctuating and punching up its more sedate leader, like the LBD. The Prime Minister to the Crown, the jester to the Queen. Unique pieces of jewelry underline the personal spin of an outfit. Here are some of my favorite punctuations.
Paula Mendoza Backbone
I bought these last fall at Paula Mendoza’s Sample Sale, in New York. One of her reps said that these are an original sample that never made it into production. One of a kind? Cool, huh?
BaubleBar Arc Earring Jackets
These inexpensive, everyday earrings are more than when-in-doubt-reach-for-a-stud. Clear crystals with gold tone metal, their over-under design catches the eye. The stud sits on top of the ear, while the arc magically sits under the lobe. They say, “Hey, yesterday’s ear hugger, I got it goin’ on!”
Ranjana Khan Organic, Bold
Ranjana mixes beading, fabrics like leather, and metals to create unique pieces. Married to exquisite designer, Naeem Khan, her artisanship is all her own.
Robert Lee Morris Drops
Sterling silver sculpture in small packages. The great RLM creates bold looks, in the simplest forms.
RJ Graziano Choker
Pearl Collar Necklace. Modern, feminized by a giant simulated (redundant—I know you knew that!) pearl. Like Kenneth Jay Lane, RJ Graziano is a costume jewelry icon.
RJ Graziano Mod Necklace
Circle, drop, mesh necklace–easy–styles up a white t-shirt.
Paula Mendoza Glaucus Silver Choker
This brilliant Colombian artist surprises with each new collection. This was also one of my sample sale finds. When I wear her pieces their saucy, irreverence takes me back to adventurous times living in Bogota, when I was a girl.
The Rare Bird, Iris Apfel Burst Collar
I have many pieces from Iris’ jewelry line. Her sensibility is exciting and attention-grabbing. I like to think I’m in her club when I buy her stuff.
My Vintage Breastplate Necklace
Vintage sounds better than old–am I right? I’ve had this in my collection for years, and couldn’t tell you who designed it. I feel like this should be categorized “classic trend” because it always works. The colors are fantastic!
