Central Park and the streets of New York were flooded with happy, upbeat visitors this past weekend.
New York City Marathon
On Saturday morning, Finnley and I walked along the finish line of the 45th running of the New York City Marathon. It was a quintessentially invigorating fall day, with all sorts of people being warmed by the bright sun, collective energy and cheer. The largest in the world, the New York City marathon courses through all five boroughs. The magnitude of running 26 miles is made impressively more relative when it’s framed in the route, rather than the number. Beginning in Staten Island, then over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Brooklyn, up to Queens, into the Bronx and down to Manhattan; about 50,000! people from all over the world end their run on Sunday where we’re strolling today.
Lining the finish area, vibrantly hued flags of the world waved across a backdrop of colorful foliage. Excited participants, family and friends found their country’s flag and captured this occasion with photos and fellowship. Just for a weekend, the shadow cast by America’s gloomy and foul Presidential election felt lighter. There was an air of wonder, possibility, and good will extended by New York to its guests.
American Sportswear
Later in the day I browsed along more natty paths–window shopping in the streets of New York. Windows displayed running gear and sportswear, and I felt the spirit of the day again as I considered that America is still the original, and everlasting titleholder in sportswear design. Designers like Geoffrey Beene, and Bill Blass were at the start of the relay, and it was brought home by Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Calvin Klein. Athleisure wear is the latest leg of this distance run and its influence and staying power is crossing more lines and still gaining speed. Companies like Lululemon are now inverting the influence to come around full circle—athletic wear begetting sportswear. A little over a year ago, Lululemon launched Kit and Ace. This spinoff elevates workout gear further into the sportswear category, with user-friendly luxury materials that are as comfortable, durable and easy-care as sweats.

At the same time, we’ve seen nostalgic Adidas’ Stan Smiths get a second wind and run with dresses and skirts on the streets. As of late, Adidas iconic track pants have seemingly inspired designers’ latest collections.
Whether keeping a look sporty, or dressed up with a heel, track pants feel powerful and cool. And you don’t have to hide behind the “just worked out” mask of the track pants precursor–the yoga pant. You don’t have to sweat it when you wear track pants, they’ve passed amateur standing, and have gone professional as a part of the pants team. Wear them and treat them as such. Is it a coincidence that they bear such a striking resemblance to the tuxedo pant? If, like me, you get a spurt of energy in your Track Pantsuit and you have a need to get a lap in, just do it!
