Edward Scissorhands Your Jeans
Cropping makes any jean current. Any leg style–straight, full, bootcut, or flared gets modern when it’s cropped. This previous Plumage 59 post on jean-chopping gives more details. But the gist is to cut 3 – 5″ above the ankle, or the point where your calf begins to get larger. Cropping gives style to old jeans that don’t work anymore. Bonus: cuffing jeans brings tons of versatility. I wear the new It Jeans that I bought a couple months ago from full-length, to cuffed-up by 6″ . Whether frayed or hemmed, cropped jeans show off ankle boots and are so now.

A Skirt Under a Skirt
If you don’t already have one, buy an inexpensive black, knit tube skirt. The key is to keep it close-fitting, and to the knee or longer. Put it under black skirts or dresses that are too short. A lightweight, pleated, cream skirt boosts a variety of otherwise back-of-the-closet short skirts, from prints to pastels to pitch black. Or, layer a skirt over a longer, plain silk slip or one that has a wide, heavy lace bottom.

A Top Under a Top
Want more coverage than a favorite top offers? And what about short tops when one’s stomach is never going to see the light of day again–I just couldn’t bring myself to go to the junior reference of saying crop tops–it’s been at least 10 years since actively buying something that little. Layer too-short over a longer tank or T. A true crop top that hits above the waist looks great over a peplum top–the fullness falling away from an empire line. Although we know the vest is our VFF for coverage, layering tops can look more contemporary.

Pair 3/4 Length Sleeve over Bell Sleeve
Don’t put away your 3/4 sleeve blazers and sweaters because the weather is starting to turn. Wear them over puffy cuffs, or bell sleeves. Or just push up, or roll up the sleeves of regular-length toppers. Topping the blouse and limiting the flow to only the sleeve bottom adds elegance and intensity.

Wear a Hoodie Under a Blazer
Any light pullover, or zip-up hoodie looks very cool under a blazer–especially if it’s oversized. I have a gray cashmere hoodie that looks hip and refined because of it’s rich yarn. I love pairing it with a classic navy blazer and jeans. Or check out this all-in-one Veronica Beard dickie blazer set.
