It begins in a classic New York City kind of way–everyone in the city seems to be wearing black. It’s cliché–one of the labels with which New Yorkers are most identified.
Like all clichés, its pattern is what gives it truth. Outfits rooted in jet slim us, hip us up, and give us ease of function in an active, sometimes dirty city life. Then the color style outliers begin emerging–showing pattern, a denim jacket thrown on top of the dark mass, neutral combinations, pops of color. Another direction New York city women are going in is to over-the-knee boots, transforming basic looks into downtown style. And distinct jackets elevate any outfit, with interest and detail. You can compare great street style to New York, by comparing (the big) apple(s) to oranges, I mean plums. (Haha–Idiom-Stretch-Alert)
