Today sporty style cross-trains with athleisure, pumping glammed-sweats, and running with sneakers and lace dresses. American designers invented sportswear, but women all over the world continue to search for more ways to wear “yoga” pants and look “dressed.”
The 2018 Olympic Winter Games have me thinking about my sportier side, and how free we are to mix in athletic gear with our everyday outfits. It used to be that you had to commit to the team sport. Now you can be a weekend warrior and willy-nilly add it in to your regular life. Like including a recreational piece to make classics more urban–sweatpants with striping down the side worn with a blazer. Lycra leggings are worn under fancy dresses. And the Sneakers trend has exploded–there’s almost nothing you can’t wear them with. Adding in sporty pieces looks young (in the right way) and cool.
Adding athletic wear into our style is another example of not holding on to the old rules, and pushing ourselves to stick our toe into the olympic-size pool of an expanding life. But when you need to tag off and return to your comfort zone too, how about the memory of matching velour sweatsuits? That’s right, Juicy Couture is back! Absent for years from the scene, they debuted a re-visioned brand last September at New York Fashion Week. A few days ago they showed Fall, 2018 at the gloomy Hotel Wolcott, to take us back in time. The 90’s are looking pretty good.
