What a standout Red Carpet showing last night at the 2017 Academy Awards! With hardly a misstep, hollywood glamour and the modern woman walked hand-in-hand. It was an eye candy sugar high that beat out previous years.
This is my take on the best of a wide array of Oscar attendees and party goers. For me, it’s purely about the dress. I didn’t read any other reviews prior to writing this post, so I wouldn’t be influenced. Like breaking the sugar addiction, I’ll have to delay the gratification of taking in all of the analysis of last night’s fashion. Can’t wait for dessert!
Princess Perfection
At last night’s 89th Annual Academy Awards, Hailee Steinfeld looked confident, with an air of femininity, and at one with her gorgeous Ralph & Russo gown. It all combined to bring to light a stunning woman. There is a lot going on in her dress, which could have looked fussy and distracted from the total look. But there was no separation in its complexity, and it will no doubt flow seamlessly into Best Dressed land.
Actor Sofia Carson wore a cotton candy gown, decorated with a field of lanky, newly blooming seedlings for her fantasy evening. She accented her Monique Lhuillier gown with a hair clip that repeated the simple stem.
Badass princess Halle Barry, wears strappy-bondage-meets-gossamer-plumes. This stunning Atelier Versace gown is eclipsed only by Barry’s incredible hair… and body…and ageless beauty.
Marchesa co-founder, Georgina Chapman wears chic, dark florals more In the Garden of Good and Evil than Cinderella.
Producer Raphaela Neihausen in a fresh, tea-length Marchesa gown. The florals run down her dress in gorgeous watercolor hues.
Actor Tracee Ellis Ross wore a belled, sweeping, encrusted red lace gown. The accessorizing was off, but the gorgeous dress was unique, with a vibe of royal-sexy-bohemian-cool, with a dash of pirate thrown in.
Simple Silhouette Shine
Actor Jeff Bridges, with his wife Susan looking pretty in a red, draped, satin gown. The sophisticated silhouette and proportion are perfect.
Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto and Monica Prieto. Prieto looks great in this youthful variant of the above gown, that is modern, with levels and great sleeve detail.
Actor Kirsten Dunst looked gorgeous wearing Dior in the classic New Look silhouette, with a dramatic curve across the décolleté and high/low hem. This amazing dress does it all with the line and cut–devoid of color, sparkle or tricks. The hair, make-up, and styling are impeccable, with a ribbon-curled diamond necklace, and gorgeous shoes that follow the edge of the bodice. This is one of my picks for Best Dressed.
Caped Column
Model Karlie Kloss wears a Stella McCartney minimal column dress, accented with a cape. It’s the ideal backdrop for Kloss’ beauty and incredible jewelry. This unbelievable choker steals the show, and makes me feel worse about my neck. Interesting nugget–Karlie’s mother is a sorority sister of mine, and her father went to our small liberal arts college too. I haven’t seen Tracy or Kurt since college, or met Karlie, but it’s no accident that she grew up to be as smart and giving, as she is stunning.
Giuliana Rancic, co-host of E!’s Live From The Red Carpet, looked beautiful in this periwinkle blue Georges Chakra gown. Aside from the great, unique color, the floating, aristocratic, grecian dress was sophisticated while holding a girl’s vision of a magical evening.
Glitz & Glamour
Actor Sofia Boutella in simple, yet interesting Chanel. Boutella looks lovely in this clean-cut silver shine.
Actor Kate Beckinsale in a silver-beaded gown with fanned, tulled shoulders. The cool, sheer skirt lightens the elaborate sum of parts so it doesn’t tip the balance.
TV Personality Julie Chen looked elegant in this long length of silver sparkle arranged in a deco pattern, with a wispy, pale stole. Her accessorizing could have been a bit more elevated.
Actress Portia Doubleday’s Oscar gown was like Indian Henna tattooing with studs, stamped out on filmy fabric. Fitting beautifully, and giving way to the floor, it was sophisticated while retaining a global flair.
Good Morning America Anchor Robin Roberts looked gorgeous! Decked in a body of shimmering gold, straps and accessories added pattern. Her dark burgundy lip, hair, and gleaming white teeth could not be eclipsed by the gilt.
Jessica Biel in this Kaufmanfranco number, and Tiffany diamond STATEMENT necklace was a-maz-ing! Shine, on shine, on shine, her long-sleeved sheath dress became the support for the jaw dropping neck piece. Cleopatra would have killed to wear this on her barge. Best Dressed Contender.
Waist Drape
I’m drawn back to Dakota Johnson’s quirky gown again and again. I’m not sure if I love it, but I can’t stay away. I think the novel waist is cool. I might prefer the dress without the Cartier museum necklace, but piling on the elements is signature Gucci. What are your thoughts?
This I know I love. Luciana Barroso, Matt Damon’s wife, wears Versace and shines! The combination of what looks like pieced-together, mirrored-tiles with smooth satin draped, and cascading down, is sexy and glamorous. The stringy straps down the back, leading back to the pleated waist is beautiful. But it all pales next to their picture of love.
Off…In The Best Way
Diane Kruger has gained a following as a stylish actor with good taste, who pushes the fashion envelope. Swathed in a rippling, silky Alexandre Vauthier mini dress she was a knockout at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party.
Actor Liberty Ross goes with the boys at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. With the right balance of shimmery brocade to black, to stay out of Liberace land, Ross looked chic having fun with her look.
